Area Calculator is a free, browser-based tool for measuring areas and distances on any image. Upload a floor
plan, map, aerial photo, satellite image, or site plan, calibrate the scale against a known distance, and draw
polygons to instantly calculate area and perimeter — all without installing software or creating an account.
Every calculation happens locally in your browser. Your images are never sent to a server, which makes the tool
fast, private, and suitable for sensitive documents like architectural drawings or land surveys.
Common Use Cases
- Floor plans and interior design — Upload an architectural drawing, set the scale from a
dimension line, and measure individual rooms, open-plan areas, or the entire floor plate. Instantly convert
between square metres and square feet for international projects.
- Land and property measurement — Trace plot boundaries on a cadastral map or satellite
image to calculate the area of a parcel. Useful for conveyancing, planning applications, and real-estate
listings where an official survey is not yet available.
- Agriculture and field measurement — Draw field boundaries on an aerial photograph to
estimate crop area, plan irrigation coverage, or calculate fertiliser requirements. Supports hectares and
acres for common agricultural workflows.
- Roofing and construction — Measure roof sections, decking areas, or footprints from
drone images or architectural elevations to estimate materials, cost, or scheduling.
- Ecological surveys and habitat mapping — Outline vegetation zones, wetlands, or study
areas on satellite imagery to support environmental impact assessments and wildlife surveys.
- Urban planning and site analysis — Quickly measure setbacks, green space ratios, car
park footprints, or building envelopes on site plans without needing specialist GIS software.
How to Measure Area in 4 Steps
- Upload your image. Click the Upload button or drag an image file onto the canvas. PNG,
JPG, WebP, and PDF files are all supported. For multi-page PDFs you can choose which page to use.
- Set the scale. Select the Scale tool, then click two points on the image whose
real-world distance you already know — for example, the ends of a dimension line, a scale bar, or two
property corners. Enter the real distance and unit. The tool uses this ratio to convert pixel measurements
into real-world values for every shape you draw.
- Draw your shapes. Select the Draw tool and click to place vertices around the area you
want to measure. Click the first vertex again (or double-click) to close the polygon. You can draw as many
separate shapes as you like — each gets a unique colour and label. Drag any vertex to fine-tune the
boundary.
- Export your results. Area and perimeter appear instantly in the sidebar. Copy the
results to the clipboard, save a labelled PNG image, export a PDF report, or download a CSV file for use
in spreadsheets. You can also save the entire project as a JSON file and reload it later.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Area Calculator free?
- Yes, completely free. There are no subscriptions, usage limits, or premium tiers. The tool is supported
by advertising, which keeps it free for everyone.
- Do my images get uploaded to a server?
- No. All processing happens in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images, measurements, and
project files never leave your device. This also means the tool works offline once the page has
loaded.
- How accurate are the measurements?
- Accuracy depends on the quality of your scale calibration and how precisely you draw the polygon
vertices. If the reference distance you enter is accurate and the image is an undistorted top-down view
(orthographic projection), results are typically accurate to within 1–2% for well-drawn shapes. Distorted
or perspective images will produce less accurate results.
- What image formats are supported?
- PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF. For PDFs, a page picker lets you choose which page to work on. There is no
maximum file size enforced by the tool, though very large images may be slow to load depending on your
device.
- Can I measure multiple areas at once?
- Yes. Draw as many polygons as you need on a single image. Each shape is listed separately with its own
area and perimeter. When two or more shapes are present, the sidebar also shows the combined total
area.
- What units of measurement are available?
- Metres, kilometres, feet, yards, and miles. Area is shown in the corresponding square unit, and large
areas are automatically converted to hectares (for metric) or acres (for imperial). You can switch units
at any time without redrawing.
- Can I save my work and come back later?
- Yes. Use the Save Project button to download a JSON file containing your image and all shapes. Load it
again at any time with the Load Project button. The app also auto-saves your last session to browser
storage so it is restored automatically on your next visit.
Why Use Area Calculator?
Most dedicated area measurement tools are either expensive desktop applications, require registration, or
are so limited in their free tier that they are not practical for everyday use. Area Calculator was built
to fill that gap: a capable, no-friction tool that respects your privacy and works on any device with a
modern browser. There is nothing to install, no account to create, and no data to hand over.
